Getting over your taking too much sleep !

I believe a majority of students preparing for exams in which they require to burn the midnight oil, to work hard and with dedication often complain about how their sleep conflicts with their preparation. Some common complaints are like –

“I can’t get up till late at night. I feel sleepy”.
“It’s hard to get up for me. All I want when I see my bed is to sleep and relax”.
“I’ll take a nap of 5 minutes (and then the 5 minutes end up being 1-2 hours)”.
“Today, I should sleep and I will get up early and study(that never happens)”.
“ When I go back from class, I’ll finish so and so chapters( but in reality, they  go to sleep as soon as they return)”.

Do you feel this can be a major factor that you aren’t able to give sufficient hours to study?

In this article, I have therefore summarized subtle points that if followed, could help you control your sleep to some extent. Fact is, nobody can assure you that following so and so things would help you overcome your sleep unless you yourself are not willing to do so. Thus above all the points that I am mentioning here, is your will.

  1. KEEP LIGHTS IN YOUR ROOM SWITCHED ON :-

Remember.. empty bed in a room is a lot more charming with lights off. If lights are kept off in your room while studying, you will fall asleep. Make sure that the lights in your room are switched on or they are not kept dim.

  1. AVOID PHYSICAL EXERCISE:-

When the body is tired from long workout, then it asks for rest and it is then hard to keep awake for studies late night.

  1. DON’T TAKE HEAVY MEAL:-

In case you have heavy meal, you are most likely to feel naturally lazy. When you feel lazy, as a general rule you hit the bed. Study becomes more difficult with an empty stomach.

Table fans put you to rest. Avoid the table fan as much as possible and make sure wind doesn’t blow directly in your face.

  1. DON’T STUDY DIFFICULT TOPICS AT NIGHT:-

During the night you feel more sluggish. At night time, you should pick those topics which are easy, interesting and charming. Favorite subjects should be picked up to study at night.

  1. AVOID STUDYING ON BED FOR TOO LONG:-

Sit on a seat with a backrest before a table when you study. When you lie on your bed while studying you may get into lazy mode. When this happens, you sleep and say good bye to books.

  1. DO MEDITATION:-

If you don’t want to lose concentration or feel sleepy while studying, you should meditate for at least 20 minutes daily, concentrating on one specific thing at a time. This helps in building up concentration.

  1. EARLY TO BED, EARLY TO RISE :-

“To gain something, you need to lose something.” Therefore you need to plan and organize your daily routine properly and go to bed early in the night and get up early in the morning.

  1. DRINK LOTS OF WATER:-

When you drink a considerable quantity of water, you don’t fall asleep easily. It helps good circulation of blood in your body and keeps you active. It also compels you to get up and go to the washroom more frequently.

  1. STUDY EARLY IN MORNING:-

If a person studies for at least 2 hrs in the early morning, his level of concentration increases. Your concentration level will increase to the extent that your two hours of studying will equal others 6 hrs of studying. The reason being that your mind is fresh in the morning after the sleep.

  1. AVOID DISTURBANCE:-

If you want to avoid sleep during studying, you need to find a place that is less distracting. Light music has proved to be somewhat beneficial while studying, however it depends upon the individual.

  1. GET SUNLIGHT:-

In case you feel sleepy while studying, go out and get some sunlight. Exposure to sunlight increases vitamin D in the body which gives you a boost of energy.

  1. TAKE A HOT WATER BATH:

In case you are making a decent attempt to keep awake yet you are not succeeding, go for a fast hot water shower.

  1. AVOID TOO MUCH STIMULANTS:-

You might feel that a consistent intake of coffee, soda and snacks is essential if you are going to study for long hours. This is not true. In fact, it can have adverse effect. Stimulants that are high in caffeine and sugar reduces brains productivity, shorten your attention snap. If you are serious about long hours study, try substituting these with water or beverages that are high in natural sources of energy (vitamin B12  B16 )

  1. EAT OMEGA 3S:-

Omega 3, among other things, is helpful in keeping a person awake. If you are feeling sleepy, eat omega 3 rich foods like fish, salmons.

  1. AVOID MILK:-

This will make you sleepy and it will be hard to concentrate on studies. Instead of milk, you can take the drinks of juicy fruits like orange and grapes.

Don’t let your sleep come between your preparation friends. Time is the most precious thing that you got. Happy studying. 🙂

  2. Hmmm .. After reading this article I am getting a guilt feeling of not having a proper sleeping habit , so here is how much I sleep
After covering a chunk of portion I sleep from 3pm to 5pm ,ie 2hrs of sleep
Now the problem is that ,I stay awake the entire night , so basically I am just sleeping for 2 hrs every day .
Yes ,sometimes I do get a little cluster headaches , but still I am habituated to this pattern
Please help me out on this

    1. Seriously man. Cut off your time wasting things in the day and allocate the time freed from it to your study. This cannot continue. Less than 6 hours of sleep means you are crippling yourself mentally. Just force yourself to sleep.
Btw, what keeps you up so late?
And if it something personal, message on the prepsera mail

      1. Our institution never conducted Comp Sci and English ,and never they will , so I spend the whole night trying to understand/ cover portions for this 2 subjects

  3. Hello it’s me again your friendly neighbourhood jee aspirant(sorry for the bad pun).
So the kvpy result came out and I didn’t clear it unfortunately…
I do not blame anybody for it but me because I didn’t study for it. So anyway leaving that aside I now i have only one way to get into IISERS
and that is through cracking jee advanced with a decent rank (5k-to7k) and today is 21st of December so i have got exactly 5 months for it. So i urgently need a plan to crack it. So let me tell you my current situation and please recommend the changes as and when required.

I have completed my entire syllabus for mains and have not touched a single book of advanced level. So i still feel like i practically know nothing about advanced(stress on the word feel)
I have now started resolving my mains books.
3.Now i will go into the specifics of the subjects
Maths:- I only touch my ncert and ncert exemplar and tata mcgraw maths(mains not advanced).
5.Physics:-HC verma for selected chapters and cengage for jee mains by BM SHARMA(i originally wanted to buy the entire set of all 6 volumes for jee advanced but since i felt like the price was too high and i didn’t have enough time and the mains book nothing but just shortened version of the 6 volumes)
    6.chemistry
    a. Organic: I know the NCERT by heart(since boards) and practice questions from various sources like BITSAT arihant and a fat book of all previous state level exams.
b.inorganic : just complete and total mugging up of ncert and nothing else.
    c. Physical chemistry:- familiar with ncert ,practice questions from various sources like BITSAT arihant and a fat book of all previous state level exams.

I am pretty confident about getting a good score in mains however i feel i have got this mind block in my head when it come to advanced. I am giving resonance test series for jee mains thats all, although i have got a online bitsat test series but that i have saved for a later date like after april 2nd or so.

So please help me chalk out a plane and get this decent rank to get into IISERS and tell me books which have got only questions and no theory because my basics are quite strong. Please contact me if you want any further details about my prep till now.

P.S. I will write my fourth aits this sunday first time on pen paper so wish me luck so that i can break that elusive 200 mark.

AND MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYBODY ON PREPSERA THE TEAM AND ALL STUDENTS. MAY THE NEW YEAR BRING IN THE SUCCESS YOU WANT.

    Yours truly
    Pradumna

    1. Hi Pradumna, it’s me again :p
Firstly, thanks a lot for your wishes and support. i I wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and loads of success in all your ventures in life.
SO, i suppose the only way for you to get that feel for advanced is to face the advanced level as a challenge rather than indirectly shirking away from it, as you seem to doing right about now.
I would sincerely recommend you to buy McGraw Hill Advanced for Maths if you want to be capable enough to clear JEE Advanced Maths.
For Inorganic Chemistry, your strategy is perfect even for advanced.
Physical chemistry – I would suggest you try N Avasthi to see the type of problems JEE Adv. would ask
Organic Chemistry – I would recommend MS Chouhan for this.
Physics – I suppose all you need here is test papers practice…like your FIITJEE AITS.

That is as far as the material is concerned. Now, if i have forgotten something, please mention that in reply to this comment.

All the best for your FIITJEE AITS. May you easily get that 200 plus score and cross it easily.

    2. I forgot to tell you this i already have two book on organic chemistry like
op tondon and solomons and fryhle (edited by ms chouhan). So my mother told me as far as organic chemistry is concerned no more books but she will buy me the tmh maths book as i only use one maths books and that also i completed.

      1. Hello did you get the email i sent to you on the prepsera mail? Please reply as soon as possible either on the mail or in the comment section.

PS I know you might be busy with writing the thermodynamics book and preparing the aits papers so take your time reply to the mail

        Yours truly
